Artist Statement: In this series of photographs, my goal was simple: to capture the candid vibrance of the Sweet Auburn Curb Market as it exists today, while subtly reflecting its storied and complex past.

Born from the aftermath of the 1917 Atlanta fire, the Sweet Auburn Curb Market was created to provide a central hub for displaced residents and vendors to access and sell essential goods.

Today, it is a symbol of resilience and community, despite a history deeply intertwined with segregation. A moment I captured attempts to depict this divide: a Black man gazing into the market, his reflection faintly visible in the butcher case, while a white hand is seen inside, symbolizing the era when Black vendors were forced to sell outside on the curb. In contrast, I conclude the series with an image that expresses the flourishing community that has since emerged, showcasing the evolution from a history of exclusion to one of inclusivity.

In capturing these scenes, I’m reminded that the market is more than just a place of commerce—it stands as a living testament to the strength found in unity and perseverance. Today, the market remains a vibrant part of Atlanta's Sweet Auburn neighborhood, known for its diversity and rich cultural history. My hope is that these images offer a sense of connection, inviting viewers to pause and reflect on both the visible and unseen stories that continue to resonate within the market’s walls.
